History of the River

“Many names have been used to denote the river from Lake Saltonstall to Long Island Sound including Stony River, Iron Works River, East Haven River, Scotch Cap River and most commonly the Farm River. The river has been used for navigation by a fertilizer factory, stone quarry, paper mill, saloon, salt hay harvesters, fisherman and boating enthusiasts. During the late 19th century, the Farm River was lined with summer cottages on both sides and many small boats were moored to their stakes. Today the river is home to a wide variety of birds and water enthusiasts of all ages.” — Jane Bouley, Town Historian
